Malawi rioters attack police station
Blantyre - Witnesses say angry residents attacked a police station after police tear gassed a crowd of hundreds who gathered at a political rally.
Witness Rebecca Mwale says residents of the Lilongwe neighbourhood attacked police during Sunday's rally for Atupele Muluzi. She says residents also beat up officers and looted their homes. Muluzi says police also detained a member of his group.
Police spokesperson Dave Chingwalu says Muluzi did not have permission to hold the gathering, but Muluzi says he did.
Concern that President Bingu wa Mutharika is intolerant of criticism and violating human rights has led to protests and strained relations between Malawi, among the world's poorest countries, and its foreign donors. At least 19 people were killed by police when anti-government demonstrations last year degenerated into looting.
