Mali arrests 4 French kidnap suspects

Bamako - Officials in Mali say four people have been arrested over the recent kidnapping of two French citizens in the West African nation.

The presidency's official Twitter account said on Monday that the suspects were "subcontracted" to an al-Qaeda group and appear to be Malian. It says they were arrested on Friday and transferred to the capital.

An official at the Malian presidency confirmed he wrote the tweets. He says the suspects will be shown on state television later on Monday.

The hostages were seized in the remote town of Hombori last month. Their kidnapping was followed the next day by a kidnapping in the town of Timbuktu.

Al-Qaeda's North Africa branch claimed responsibility for the kidnappings in a statement posted on jihadi internet forums.

The French Foreign Ministry did not immediately confirm the arrests.
