Bamako - A doctor says that a journalist has been given several stitches on his head and will need to get his head scanned after being severely beaten by an Islamist rebel group.

Malian radio journalist Abdoul Malick Maiga was attacked late on Sunday for reporting on a protest march in Gao that led the jihadist group Movement for Unity and Jihad in West Africa, known as MUJAO, to go back on their decision to cut off the hand of a man who allegedly stole something.

Dr Mohamed Diamoye said on Tuesday that Maiga's condition is improving, but the damage to his head is unknown.

Mali's northern city of Gao first fell under control of Tuareg rebels in March, but in June was taken over by the jihadist MUJAO who want to impose Shariah law.
