Bamako - Authorities in Mali have arrested an army colonel whom they believe was behind the unrest at a military camp near the capital earlier this week.

A spokesman for the country's former coup leader - now a 4-star general - said the suspects arrested include Colonel Youssou Traore.

Lt Mohamed Bou Coulibaly said on Thursday that Traore and another former high-ranking junta member had "pushed the officers to commit mutiny".

Gunfire rang out from the Kati military camp on Monday, the very same place from where Captain Amadou Sanogo launched his March 2012 coup.

The unrest at Kati has prompted fears of further instability in the West African country.

Late on Wednesday, new President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita addressed the nation on television and called the Kati uprising "shameful".
