Nairobi - A mob killed a man at a polling station in western Kenya on Thursday, in what police described as the first deadly incident of an otherwise relatively peaceful nationwide ballot.
A mob pounced on a man accused of killing another earlier this month over electoral issues and exacted revenge. The incident took place in Rongo district, about 280 km northwest of the capital.
"Villagers attacked him at a polling station on suspicion of involvement in the previous murder. Although we treat the incident as political violence, we are probing it," Nyanza provincial police commander Grace Kaindi told AFP.
According to figures compiled by the country's main rights organisation, the latest murder would bring to 78 the number of people who have died in poll-related violence since the campaign was launched.
Elsewhere, police stressed that no major incidents were reported as millions of Kenyans stood in queues to choose a president, 210 parliament members and some 2 000 councillors.
