Nairobi - Masked gunmen have attacked Garrisa university in Kenya's northeast on Thursday.

The gunmen have reportedly taken hostages inside the university, Al Jazeera reported.

Police official Musa Yego said gunshots and explosions can be heard from a building on the campus, which is surrounded by police and military.

The attack reportedly began at dawn.

Kenyan defence forces are reportedly on the scene, while two policemen and one student have been rushed to hospital, BBC reported.

It is still unclear who is responsible for the attack.

Kenya's northern and eastern regions, which border Somalia, have been most affected by attacks blamed on al-Shabaab Islamists from Somalia.

They have previously vowed retribution against Kenya for sending its troops to Somalia.
