2010-09-30 21:20

Nouakchott - An Air Algeria plane with 95 passengers on board was stranded in Mauritania on Thursday, having tried twice to take off but forced to land again, an airport official and passenger told AFP.

The Boeing 737-800 headed for Algiers "tried twice without success to leave Nouakchott," the airport official said, without being able to say what caused the problem.

The plane was in the air for 30 minutes late on Wednesday and at again around midday on Thursday but both times had to return to the airport, passenger Mohamed Mahmoud Ould Emmatt, a Mauritanian parliamentarian, told AFP.

"We returned safe and sound to Nouakchott after the second try and we are still waiting for an alternative solution," he said.

Mauritanian students and Algerian citizens working in Mauritania were among the passengers.
