Nouakchott - Mauritania's president Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz has returned home to the capital Nouakchott from Paris, where he was treated after being "accidentally" shot by a soldier in October, an official source said.

Abdel Aziz flew back discreetly on the night of Thursday to Friday after spending two weeks in France. It was his second round of treatment there, following a 40-day stint and a brief return home.

The 55-year-old former general, who seized power in a 2008 coup and was elected a year later, had been shot in the intestines in what was described as an accident.

He had been travelling in an unmarked vehicle when he came across a mobile army checkpoint outside the capital. His failure to stop led a plain clothes soldier to open fire.

The soldier has said it was a mistake and has not been punished, with the government accepting the shooting as an accident. The opposition has demanded further investigation.

The president's mandate expires in 2014.
