Brussels - European Union foreign ministers are seeking to forge a joint response to the crisis in Egypt which could help to end the violence and promote a return to negotiations.

EU officials say ministers were expected to weigh proposals for halting aid programmes and suspending arms shipments in their talks in Brussels on Wednesday.

German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle said the 28-nation bloc wants to send "a strong signal to Egypt", but called for "realistic expectations".

Clashes between Egyptian security forces and supporters of deposed President Mohammed Morsi have killed hundreds of people since last week.

Europe is Egypt's biggest trading partner and a major source of aid, loans and tourists for the country.
