Missionary killed in Kenya

Nairobi - Kenyan police are probing the killing of an elderly British Catholic priest in the Indian Ocean town of Lamu, a government official said on Saturday.

Mill Hill missionary Brian Thorp, 77, who hails from Derbyshire, was killed outside his room on Thursday morning in Lamu township, said area district commissioner Charles Mumo.

He said police were probing the murder, the first such incident in the sleepy Kenyan outpost.

A former Royal Air Force orderly, Thorp joined the Mill Hill missionaries in 1968 and has since worked in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya and Uganda.
