Nairobi - An enraged mob beheaded the brother of a deranged man who went on a shooting rampage in Kenya's central Rift Valley, killing five people with an assault rifle, police said on Thursday.
Relatives of those murdered sought out the gunman, but were unable to find him and instead took revenge on his brother, who was at the family home in Marakwet district when the group arrived.
District police chief Paul Kariuki said: "They went to the murderer's homestead and when they did not find him, they went for his innocent brother, shot him, cut off his head with a panga and then razed their two houses."
He said the rampage, which took place on Wednesday, began when the alleged killer, Kibor Yego, went beserk after a family dispute and began firing an AK-47 indiscriminately at his relatives and bystanders.
Killed three on the road
"He fired at his father but the father managed to escape unhurt.
"He then left the house and killed three people he encountered on the way, then ran up a nearby hill and shot dead another two other people," said Kariuki.
No arrests have been made yet and police have launched a manhunt for Yego, who is believed to be hiding in a forest in Marakwet, about 450km northwest of Nairobi.
