Mogadishu - A Somali medical doctor was killed on Wednesday when a bomb hidden in the car of his colleague exploded in a hospital parking lot, police and hospital staff said. The owner of the car and seven other people were injured.

A nurse said hospital staff believed the target was Abdikadir Hussein Jim'aale, the doctor who owned the car. He and his colleague were about the leave the Mogadishu hospital after a night shift. "We don't know the motive behind the attack," senior police officer Cornell Bo'or Ali told dpa. "An investigation is underway."

Nobody claimed responsibility for the explosion. The radical Islamist group al-Shabaab, which frequently stages attacks in Mogadishu, usually targets government officials. Also on Wednesday, three suspected al-Shabaab fighters shot dead a junior member of the security forces in Mogadishu, senior security official Mohamed Hassan told dpa.

The victim was targeted on his way to work, Hassan said. "The murderers ... escaped, but but we are searching for them," said the official, who attributed the attack to al-Shabaab.
