Nairobi - Kenya's ex-president Daniel arap Moi resigned his post as chairperson of the official opposition party on Thursday, nine months after leaving office.
Moi, 79, announced his resignation from the top job in the Kenya African National Union (Kanu) after a party meeting. No successor was announced.
He told reporters he was stepping down to unite the party and give room to a younger generation.
Moi, a former schoolteacher, was Kenya's president for 24 years. He was forced to step down last year under the provision for term limits in the country's multi- party constitution.
Kanu's presidential candidate Uhuru Kenyatta then lost the December election to Mwai Kibaki and his National Rainbow Coalition, the first time Kanu ceded power in 40 years of independence.
