Maputo - Police in Mozambique say they have arrested a man suspected of poisoning traditional beer that killed more than 70 people last month.

Provincial police spokesperson Luis Nudia said on Wednesday that police arrested Graciano Antonio after he fled the northeast Tete province.

Health authorities said nearly 200 people were hospitalised after drinking traditional beer at a funeral in the region. Pombe, a traditional Mozambican beer, is made from millet or corn flour and brewed for about two days.

Health authorities said they believed the beer was poisoned with crocodile bile, a body fluid produced in the liver, but experts have cast doubt on whether bile is poisonous. The poisoned beer is still being tested.

Nudia says Antonio is yet to be charged.
