Naked blogger asks women to unveil

2011-12-26 17:58

Cairo - An Egyptian blogger, who sparked controversy when she posted a nude self-portrait online, on Monday asked women who want to remove their veils to send her photographs to publish them online.

Aliaa Magda Elmahdy, a university student, asked women to send photos of themselves with and without the veil, their reasons behind having worn the veil and why they took it off as well as the reactions of others after they had removed it.

"Women who were veiled and took off the veil and women who are veiled and want to take off the veil, send me all or some of these items... if you agree to publish them," Elmahdy wrote on her blog A Rebel's Diary.

Many in Egypt, a conservative Muslim-dominated country where most women wear the veil, were angered when Elmahdy posted a nude photo of herself on the blog in October. She has since received death threats.

In November, she called on Egyptian men to take photographs of themselves wearing veils and upload them to the internet, to show solidarity with women who might be forced to wear the veil.

    Veil off to this woman.

  • Irene - 2011-12-26 18:36

Aliaa Magda Elmahdy is a hero. It's long overdue that these women who walk around looking like penguins and allowing themselves to be dominated by males, start putting their foot down.

Muslim women are unfairly mistreated by thier men. By wearing completely black from head to toe is just oppresion on its own. There is no sand storms here in Johaennesburg to protect yourself from, just take off the black silhouette and breath fresh air. Beside the Muslim bombing in countries such as Nigeria I fail to establish the good thing about this religion. All Muslim women I say stand up and demand your God given rights.

its my choice to wear what i want.no one forces anyone me to dress like that . before you condemn all muslims please read some books about islam and educate yourself before you ramble such nonsense.

Do the 'Nude' thing ladies, you have the right to show your beauty. Your menfolk are the cowards who want to cocoon you because of their own insecureties! They are scared that you might become a beautiful human being with your own mind and desires and become better person than they could ever be! I am a very straight man and will always be! God bless you all LADIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

For a lot of women a veil would be cheaper than disguising themselves with layers of make-up.

      Xenswim1 - 2011-12-27 09:11

How right you are. Oprah for one look like a bush mechanic without makeup. I can think of many others who could scare a hungry dog from a meat wagon without make up. So maybe the burka is not such a bad idea.

      Garth - 2011-12-27 09:50

Hey, that's an insult to bush mechanics. Take it back or I'll set my assistants on you. Bobo, Gonzo, Cheetah - rip his arms off!

  • Xenswim1 - 2011-12-27 09:08

Understand one thing. Islam demands this of women. In short if you are woman and follow the teaching of Islam then you obey the laws. Islam is more a way of life than a religion. Most women are not forced into wearing the Burka. Ehre it worries me is that the criminals use the Burka to do crime and bomb.

Nowhere in the Koran does it say it is a prerequisite for woman to wear a veil. It is a tradition developed by insecure men who wish to control woman and degrade them.

      Gail - 2011-12-27 11:22

You know Cameron I consider that it is more degrading to women as a whole that Western men require their women to put everything on show to be leered at and ogled by lascivious males who consciously or subconsciously objectify them as commodities and sex objects but then of course we know that most Western men judge women first on their looks and their perfect bodies and take no account that within that plain conservative dress worn by anyone less than an Angelina lookallike may be an incredible mind and fiery sexual nature. Why else does every product in the Western world have to have some hypergorgeous overexposed and possibly airbrushed women draped over it? I am 63 and long past my sell by date but this form of oppression is no better than that chosen by devout Muslim women and we would do well to think on that. Christianity once expected the same and did far worse with their women. I was a very beautiful and shapely woman before I had three sons with some difficulty in between moving 21 times in 20 years working full time and being a wife by choice to a very restless man. Nobody is perfect even the most handsome, wealthy and accomplished man or woman. Life is about seeking the Good in each and every human and not the most perfect person and learning to respect what we perceive to be flaws within them. I am a Christian and western woman who has chosen the middle path and old enough to love who I am now. I respect the right of Muslim women who wish to wear the burqha.

  • alan.erwin1 - 2011-12-27 11:05

It’s the men that make me sick; they want their women covered up. BUT like to look at those that don’t. So the answer is these men need to be made to wear blinkers when out and about and if seen looking be prosecuted. Then they can feel what it is like to be made to live inside a shell. Well done ladies we of the normal like to see your pretty faces and smile. :-)

  • Garth - 2011-12-27 11:30

Another comment deleted news24? Why? Because I wrote that people who suppress women based on religious ideologies are `stupid religious a$$holes'? Does someone at news24 support the suppression of women based on these archaic beliefs? Or are the majority of your readers those that support the suppression of women based on religious beliefs? Oh that the world would wise up and delete religion.

Brave lady. I hope she isn't hurt for her efforts.

  • Erich - 2012-02-26 20:11

Aliaa asked female Muslams to take off their veils, but to no avail.
