New system to cut traffic jams

Pretoria - A one-way road system has been introduced in the Tshwane suburb of Hatfield to help reduce traffic congestion, the City of Tshwane said on Wednesday.

"We have experience traffic problems where vehicles had to drive on pavements to get to the other ends," Subesh Pillay, the member of the mayoral committee responsible for infrastructure, said on Wednesday.

Pillay was opening a one-way ring-road around Hatfield.

The route would be used by, among others, buses transporting people from the park and ride areas during the Confederations Cup and the World Cup, he said.

Pillay said that, in tandem with the opening of the new road, Hilda and Burnett streets had been made one-ways.

Burnett Street became a one-way on Wednesday, while Hilda Street changed a week ago.
