Niamey - Nine security agents in Niger were killed on Thursday in multiple "terrorist" attacks in the western Tillaberi region near Mali, the government said.

"Terrorists staged simultaneous attacks. Five policemen, two gendarmes and two national guards were killed," the defence and interior ministries said in a joint statement.

The statement did not specify who the attackers were and there have been so far no claims of responsibility.

It said the attacks targeted a camp housing refugees from Mali, a local prison and a military patrol.

Several prisoners had escaped from the jail at Ouallam - the site of one of the attacks - which is less than 100km from the capital Niamey.

A witness at the refugee camp said the attackers came on eight motorbikes with two people riding on each.

"They were crying 'God is Greatest'," a local official told a radio station.

A humanitarian source said they crossed over from Mali and went back after the attack at the camp, where more than 6 000 Malian refugees have lived since 2012.
