Abuja - A coalition of international bodies on Monday granted 15 civil society groups in Nigeria $5m to prepare for 2007 elections.
An official statement from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) said the funds were "to mobilise Nigerians for the 2007 elections and enhance women's participation" in the April 2007 poll.
It said that the grant would also be used to monitor the conduct of the polls to ensure a credible, free and fair election.
The support was given from the UNDP-managed Joint Donor Basket Fund to which the European Union, the British department for international development, the Canadian International Development Agency and the UN Development Programme had contributed.
Four of the prominent beneficiaries of the grant were the Transition Monitoring Group, the Civil Liberties Organisation, Women Advocates Research and Documentation Centre and Women Aid Collective.
