AU: memories of hope 50 years ago

The AU is celebrating 50 years of existence this year. Set up in 1963 in the Ethiopian capital, the body had 32 initial signatory governments, with 21 more nations joining over the years.

Lagos - Twenty-two people were burnt to death and three seriously injured when two vehicles crashed head on and burst into flames on a road in southwest Nigeria, police said on Wednesday.

"The victims, 22 of them, were burnt beyond recognition following the accident on Monday night on Akure-Owo road," a senior police officer said, asking not to be named.

He said three people sustained serious injuries in the crash involving an 18-seat bus and a truck carrying aluminium rods.

He said the bus was trying to avoid a pothole on the road, which was undergoing repairs, when the driver lost control and collided with the truck coming in the opposite direction.

Accidents on Nigeria's poorly-maintained inter-city roads are common.
