Lagos - Officials say the editor of a major Nigerian newspaper was shot during a robbery in the country's largest city.

Steve Nwosu, who serves as the editor of The Daily Sun, suffered a grazing gunshot wound to his head during the robbery on Wednesday. The Sun's Thursday edition said Nwosu was attacked by robbers on a motorcycle after leaving a bank in Lagos with more than $1 500.

Mohammed Garba, president of the Nigerian Union of Journalists, said on Thursday that he believed the attack to be only an opportunistic robbery. Garba said police had begun investigating the attack.

Attacks on journalists remain all-too common in Nigeria, a nation where politicians, security services and others routinely harass reporters. Others have been beaten or killed.
