Cape Town – Boko Haram Islamists reportedly held the more than 200 Nigerian schoolgirls for 11 days near their school without the authorities intervening.

According to The Telegraph, relatives of the schoolgirls claimed that the teenagers languished in a camp just 30km from their village Chibok where they were abducted.

The report quoted Reverend Enoch Mark, whose two daughters were among those kidnapped, as saying the military had missed a crucial chance to rescue the girls.

At least 276 girls are missing in Nigeria after they were abducted by Boko Haram Islamists on 14 April. They were kidnapped from their boarding school in Chibok in Borno state.

Specialist teams and equipment

Meanwhile International effort to rescue the girls continues to widen.

Reports indicate Britain, the United States and France have already sent specialist teams and equipment to help Nigeria's military in the search concentrated in the remote northeast, which has been hit by five years of deadly violence.

French President Francois Hollande said a summit on security in west Africa, focusing on Boko Haram, could be held as early as this Saturday "if the countries agree", an AFP report said.

Israel on Sunday also offered to help, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressing deep shock at the crime rate against the girls, according to a Reuters report.
