Lagos - The governor of a southern state in Nigeria says six other governors and a former presidential candidate have formed a splinter group within the ruling party.

Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi, the governor of Rivers state, said on Monday he is part of the splinter group that wants the ruling People's Democratic Party to do more to tackle poverty and crime as well as improve education.

The weekend split was the first major internal challenge to President Goodluck Jonathan since he was elected in 2011. The governors who formed the splinter group lead states with some of the highest voter turnout in Africa's most populous nation.

Jonathan's party has won every election since decades of military dictatorship ended in 1999 and democracy was restored.
