Cape Town – President Ian Khama says Botswana is the only country in Africa where corruption suspects are investigated in order to ensure transparency.

Khama said this as he warned critics of his administration to stop dragging the government into the mud by accusing it of corruption.

"It is only in Botswana where there is a ministry, a high court judge for corruption issues, and prosecution specialising in corruption cases," Mmegi online quoted Khama as saying.

Khama, who was addressing a star election rally in Sefhophe, said there was no country without corruption but what was important was how each country fought it.

Last year Transparency International ranked Botswana as the 30th least corrupt country in its annual Corruption Perceptions Index.

The Southern African country is headed for general elections on 24 October.

Botswana is also ranked among the most democratic countries on the continent, although the opposition complains it suffers harassment, according to AFP.
