Cape Town - There were no reports of shooting during the kidnapping of Libyan Prime Minster Ali Zeidan by gunmen from his hotel in Tripoli early on Thursday.

Al Jazeera said Zeidan was taken by kidnappers believed to be from a group called the Libyan Revolutionary Operations Chamber.

The broadcaster said no shots were fired during the incident.

Meanwhile IBTimes reported on Thursday that a video still by Al-Arabiya television channel showed Zeidan in a grey shirt undone at the collar and surrounded by several men in civilian clothes.

The report also said that one of the guards at the hotel described the incident as an "arrest".

The abduction comes five days after US forces seized senior al-Qaeda figure Abu Anas al-Liby - indicted for the twin 1998 bombings of US embassies in east Africa - off the streets of Tripoli.
