Outrage over Morocco rape victim suicide

2012-03-14 19:42

Rabat - Outrage has been building in Morocco's online community over the case of a 16-year-old girl who committed suicide after being forced to marry her rapist.

According to the local press, Amina Filali died after taking rat poison on Saturday. She had been married for the last five months to a man who raped her a year earlier.

The Moroccan penal code allows for a rapist to marry his victim to escape prosecution and preserve her family's honour, according to traditional practice.

The victim's father said in an interview with online Moroccan newspaper goud.ma that the court pushed the marriage on her.

Activist Abadila Maaelaynine tweeted that Amina had been "triply violated," first by her rapist, then by tradition and then by the Moroccan penal code.

  • Stormkaap - 2012-03-14 20:18

Thsi is customary law! The rapist should be hanged!

  • JudithNkwe - 2012-03-14 20:34

Sadly Islam has to sort this problem out and hold men responsible for violence against females. I would like all religions to abide by their precepts and acknowledged that women have an equal place in society or admit that they don't.

      Dmitri - 2012-03-14 20:43

They will not sort it out. Remember that Mohammed married Aisha when she was 6 and consumated the marriage when she was 9. That is just the way they are. In Afganistan and most of the other 'stans' they are so inbred it is scary. Ok, let the muslims declare a fatwa against me for speaking the truth!!!

      idris.saanglai - 2012-03-14 21:27

This is no ruling of Islam. In Islam rape is punishable by death only. This is a custom introduced by Morocco itself

      Dmitri - 2012-03-14 21:53

@Idris, please get real. I spent quite some time in the Mid East and I have seen first hand how women are treated there. They have no rights at all. They are forced to marry cousins etc and if they do not they get murdered, disfigured, etc. I have seen it first hand. Then when they want to escape they are killed because they want to escape from the inhumane conditions under which they live. No matter how you want to sweet talk this, you know it is the truth (unless you live by Western standards and use your religion for other purposes).

Sick society, religion and human beings (if you can call them human). I just can't wrap my mind around the absurdity of this case. It is so infuriating.

  • Snothile Ngwane - 2012-03-14 22:24

This is simply appalling! Its way beyond barbarism. and they do this in d name of religion, Njani?

  • wesleywt - 2012-03-15 04:28

Honour? I'd rather have my daughter. If this is what religious people call morals then they should go to their heaven. Because its actually hell.

  • crismoyo - 2012-03-15 06:16

This is one of the sickest law in the world.

  • Schmee - 2012-03-15 07:59

So now where are the comments from those idiots that say that we should have Sharia law in South Africa?

      Tom - 2012-03-15 08:53

Shariah Law demands the Excecution of Rapists, Child Molesters.....Morocco is a Monarchy whose courts are corrupt and NOT Islamic.

  • Tom - 2012-03-15 08:52

This is NOT Islam people...........In Islam, the penalty for Rape is DEATH........The Taleban in Afghanistan were EXECUTING Rapists and Child Molestors BEFORE they were removed from Power by NATO...... Its because of instances in Morocco like this why the Arab Spring or Revolution has started and is spreading throughout the Middle East.......its the man and woman on the streets fight against corrupt Dictatorships, Monarchies, corrupt Courts etc.......who rule their countries by their own whims and fancies and NOT Islam! Morocco for example has a very corrupt court system where the judges demand bribes for simple procedural matters etc. But the Anti-Islam brigade have already made up their minds and blamed Islam once again for the actions of a corrupt few......who have little or nothing to do with Islam. The father himself says that the Court forced the marriage.....

      Heibrin - 2012-03-15 11:18

Name one country where Sharia law actually protects women??

  • Morama - 2012-03-15 08:53

Cry my beloved continent....what a hell is wrong with Africa?

  • Moi - 2012-03-15 10:13

Absolutely disgusting! That poor child. RIP

  • Gemma-Leigh - 2012-03-15 10:28

I feel deeply for this girl...I think many would have done the same.

  • Bernice - 2012-03-15 11:43

This story saddens me that the LAW decided she is to marry the sick freak who raped her. This country needs a wake up call. I wonder if this judge would of been so quick decide this girls fate if it was his daughter - then again they dont respect women anyway so why would he care. TIME FOR CHANGE.
