Maiduguri - Police say at least 34 civilians and six security officers were killed in sectarian violence that engulfed a city in Nigeria's northeast.

Yobe State police chief Patrick Egbuniwe said on Wednesday that four policemen and two soldiers were among the dead after a radical Islamist sect known as Boko Haram unleashed multiple attacks in Damaturu.

Boko Haram launched its attacks Monday evening. A gun battle with security forces lasted well into Tuesday.

The death toll is expected to rise as rescuers continue to search for the wounded and the dead. Officials had previously said at least 25 people died.

The city was deserted on Wednesday. The government imposed a round-the-clock curfew that left residents trapped wherever they were when violence erupted.

Across the city, people are running out of food, medicine and water.
