Poll victory claims 'hasty'

Nairobi - The head of Kenya's ruling party election machine on Saturday dismissed opposition claims of certain victory in the previous day's landmark polls as hasty and irrelevant.
"Have they usurped the roll of the electoral commission?" charged William Ruto, Home Affairs Minister and Director of Elections for the Kenya African National (KANU) party.
The main opposition alliance, the National Rainbow Coalition (NARC), earlier claimed to have a "commanding lead" in the presidential, parliamentary and local elections held on Friday.
"The electoral commission is the final authority on the elections and we are waiting for results from them," Ruto told AFP.
"We shall respect the final result from the electoral commission," he added.
He said the presidential vote was "moving on very well" for the KANU candidate Uhuru Kenyatta.
Earlier, outgoing president Daniel arap Moi said he would hand over the presidency to the opposition if they were declared the winners. - Sapa-AFP
