Prison dept fraud report due

2009-07-23 19:01

Cape Town - A report into R1.6bn of correctional services tenders will be completed by August, the department said on Thursday.

The report stems from an investigation by the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) into nutrition, CCTV security, fencing and TV monitor tenders entered into by the correctional services department.

"The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has given acting national commissioner of correctional services, Jennifer Schreiner an assurance that a final report on its three year investigation into multi-million rand tenders will be submitted in August 2009," a statement from the department said.

The investigation was commissioned by correctional services in March 2006.

The meeting between Schreiner and SIU head Willie Hofmeyer covered "the fight against fraud and corruption, including disciplinary actions and criminal investigations against officials fingered by the probe", the statement said.

"The meeting also discussed possible areas for future cooperation between the SIU and the department of correctional services".

The SIU is expected to brief Minister of Correctional Services Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula when the report is finalised.
