Moscow - President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday held talks with his Ugandan counterpart Yoweri Museveni at his residence outside Moscow as Russia seeks to revive Soviet-era ties with Africa.

Museveni, who has dominated his east African nation for the last two-and-a-half decades, was making his first ever official visit to Russia although he came on a private visit in 2009.

With an eye on key energy and transport projects, Russia has been seeking to strengthen ties in recent years with the major players in Africa like Nigeria and fellow BRICS emerging economy South Africa.

"In recent times, Russia had been actively developing relations with our friends in sub-Saharan Africa," Putin said.

Musevini for his part thanked Putin for the support Moscow has shown Uganda going back to the Soviet Union, which he said had made a huge contribution to the collapse of colonialism in Africa, the Kremlin said.
