Nairobi - A captured rebel soldier in Burundi admitted that his forces were involved in the December killing of the Vatican's ambassador to the central African country, local media reported on Wednesday.
Burundian radio stations reported that the soldier said he was with the Forces of National Liberation (FNL) rebels who fired on the car of Irish Monsignor Michael Courtney, the Papal Nuncio.
However, a spokesperson for the FNL told Radio Isanganiro that the soldier is not a member of the rebel movement and repeated denials that the FNL conducted the ambush.
The attack took place in a region known to be under the control of the FNL.
