Monrovia - The military leadership of Liberia's main rebel group said on Thursday it had ousted chairperson Sekou Damate Conneh, accusing him of taking bribes for posts in the west African state's transitional government.
Calling themselves the "military high command" of Liberians United for Reconciliation and Democracy (Lurd), a group of 14 generals and 20 colonels led by defence chief of staff Lieutenant General Seaye Sheriff said they passed a vote of no confidence against Conneh.
They said they had replaced him with his estranged wife, Aicha Keita Conneh.
Lurd rose up in 1999 to oust then president Charles Taylor, elected two years earlier, sparking the second civil war in quick succession in the Atlantic coastal nation.
