Kinshasa - Congolese soldiers killed nine fighters from Uganda's Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) after the rebels attacked a village in northeast Democratic Republic of Congo, the United Nations said on Sunday.
Between 30 to 50 LRA members attacked the village of Dungu on Saturday, a spokesperson for MONUC, the UN mission in the DRC, said in Kinshasa.
"The FARDC (DRC army forces) responded and pushed back the LRA. The bodies of nine LRA members were found in the streets," spokesperson Matlodje Munubai told AFP.
The village of Dungu is located about 250km from the DRC border with Uganda and some 100 kilometres from the border with Sudan.
The LRC rebels have had bases in southern Sudan for several years and have also established camps in northeast DRC where the LRC has made frequent incursions since 2006.
