Johannesburg - Former president Nelson Mandela was an inspirational figure, non-governmental organisation African Diaspora Forum said on Friday morning.

Vice Chairperson Jean-Pierre Lukamba was responding to news of the death of South Africa's first democratically-elected president.

"We are calling on all Africans, wherever they are, to take a moment to pause [and] reflect on the life of this great man, our African international icon, and all he has given to the global community," he said in a statement.

"On behalf of African Diaspora Forum, I extend my condolences to the biological and political family of Nelson Mandela, to the people of South Africa, to all Africans, and to the rest of the world...."

Mandela's memory was particularly cherished by those inspired by his pan-African values and his unwavering commitment to freedom and ubuntu.

Just before midnight on Thursday, President Jacob Zuma announced that Mandela, 95, had died at his home in Houghton, Johannesburg.

Friends, colleagues, comrades and family of Nelson Mandela are invited to share their memories and tributes, and to light a candle for him, on his profile at Remembered.co.za.
