Johannesburg - Roads near Diepsloot township were safe for motorists on Monday morning following violent clashes with the police at the weekend, an official said.
"For this morning, the road is safe," said police spokesperson Captain Bonginkosi Msimango.
"Everything was calm during the night but a strong police contingent remains in the area."
A protest in Diepsloot on Sunday ended in the stoning of traffic, the destruction of two police cars and five arrests.
"At about 10:00, the community of Diepsloot Extension One was addressed by their councillor," said Msimango.
The meeting concerned the removal of some of the shacks in the area.
"After the meeting the community started to riot. They stoned two SAPS [SA Police Service] cars, burning one," said Msimango.
Protesters also began stoning passing cars on the R511, forcing Johannesburg Metro Police to close the road at 16:30.
Five people have been arrested for public violence.
