Rwanda’s court for extradited suspects

2012-02-16 13:01
Kigali - Rwanda's high court has created an international crimes chamber to try extradited suspects, including those transferred from the UN-backed International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, a statement said on Thursday.

The genocide-scarred African country has been seeking the transfer of suspects from other countries. The new chamber will have six judges, said the statement by the judiciary.

The UN-backed ICTR is to wind up lower court cases by June, and appeals by 2014. Cases that have not started by June will be transferred to national courts, but not necessarily Rwanda's.

Leon Mugesera, a Rwandan deported last month from Canada and then charged in Kigali with plotting genocide and other crimes, is expected to be the first to be tried by Rwanda's new court.

The court is also to try genocide suspect Jean Uwinkindi, who is to be transferred from the Tanzania-based tribunal for Rwanda.

About 800 000 people were killed in the 1994 Rwanda genocide. The ICTR court was set up later that year to try the main perpetrators of the massacre.
