Freetown - The mayor of Sierra Leone's capital Freetown Herbert George Williams was fined more than €31 000 on Wednesday for fraud.

Williams and five other officials were convicted last week. He was given 30 days to pay his fine, or else face three years in prison.

Fines for the other men ranged from €1 800 to €22 000.

Relatives of the men cheered the fines, with some saying: "It's better than going to jail."

Prosecutors said Williams had broken rules relating to council service contracts and that he had failed to pay employee payroll taxes and other worker contributions.

Anti-corruption commissioner Joseph Kamara said in a statement that "the judgement is momentous in the fight against corruption".
