Pretoria - South Africa and Nigeria needed to work on bilateral relations for the sake of promoting peace and security in the continent, presidential spokesperson Vincent Magwenya said on Monday.
Speaking from the Africa-France Summit in Nice, Magwenya said President Jacob Zuma and incoming Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan met for their first formal meeting on the sidelines of the summit.
"They agreed that going forward, they must work to intensify and to further deepen relations.
"The bilateral commission must be revitalised as it has a lot of potential to help the two countries," said Magwenya.
Foreign ministers from Nigeria were also directed to work with Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe to "promote peace and security on the continent, economic and social development".
Zuma also applauded Jonathan for the "smooth management" of the country, following the death of former president Umaru Yar'Adua.
