Johannesburg - South Africa's ambassador to the Democratic Republic of Congo had left the residence of that country's vice president Jean-Pierre Bemba in Kinshasa before fighting broke out, SABC news reported on Tuesday.
According to earlier reports that 12 delegates, including ambassador Sisa Ngombane, were evacuated from Bemba's residence when armed forces reported to be loyal to President Joseph Kabila attacked it on Monday night.
Ngombane says he was only informed on his return to South Africa that fighting had broken out.
Bemba will face Kabila in a second-round runoff election.
Meanwhile, all flights to and from Kinshasa have been cancelled as the airport is not operational, SABC reported.
