Cape Town – South Africa has donated R100m in aid to Namibia to help ease the impact of the drought currently rocking the country, a report says.

President Jacob Zuma who was on a state visit in Windhoek last week said the aid package complemented global efforts to help Namibia minimise the impact of drought on food security, according to an SABC report.

Namibia has been hard hit by severe drought, the worst in 30 years, the report said.

In June the Turkish government also has donated N$100 000 towards the national drought relief effort in that country.

Al Jazeera reported last month that almost one million people out of Namibia's 2.3 million population faced moderate to serious levels of food insecurity.

The Namibian government in May estimated this year's harvest would yield 42% less than 2012.
