Johannesburg - The government welcomed on Saturday the stepping-down of Togo's army-installed president Faure Gnassingbe, the department of foreign affairs said.
"The South African government joins the African Union (AU) and the Economic Community of West African States (Ecowas) in welcoming the developments in Togo following the stepping down of Faure Gnassingbe," said Foreign Affairs spokesman Ronnie Mamoepa.
The development underlined the African leadership's determination not to accept unconstitutional transfers of power anywhere on the continent, Mamoepa said.
The department expressed its confidence that both the AU and Ecowas would keep an eye on developments in Togo with a view to helping the country return to democracy and achieve peace and stability.
