Johannesburg - The remains of former Malawian president Bingu wa Mutharika will be taken to his home country this weekend, the SA National Defence Force (SANDF) said on Friday.

Spokesman Siphiwe Dlamini said the remains would be flown from the Waterkloof Air Force Base on Saturday. "The former president will be accorded the farewell ceremony befitting his stature.

"This is but one of the contributions that South Africa made to ensure a better Africa and a better world... " he said.

A number of his relatives and officials would leave on the same aircraft. Mutharika was flown to South Africa after suffering a heart attack on April 5.

He was pronounced dead on arrival at a military hospital on the same day.
