Cape Town - Two 14-year-old scholars were arrested for allegedly stabbing a 16-year-old boy in Athlone, Western Cape police said on Friday.

Captain Carol Fisher said the pair were arrested on Wednesday after they allegedly stabbed the 16-year-old in the chest and fled. The reason for the stabbing was not known.

The older boy was hospitalised.

Fisher said the two primary school pupils and their parents were called to the Manenberg police station where a case of assault was opened.

The pair appeared in the Athlone Magistrate's Court on Thursday and were released into their parents' custody.

The case was postponed to July 28.
