Cairo - Egyptian security officials say one person has been killed and eight wounded in a blast targeting police vehicles near a metro station in Cairo.

The blast occurred a few hours after a car bomb targeted Egypt police headquarters on Friday in the heart of Cairo leaving four dead and scores wounded, officials said. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to brief the media.

Witnesses say drops of blood were scattered at the site of the attack, also next to famous Russian Culture Centre in the Dokki district.

The near-simultaneous attacks are the first in central Cairo since the surge of militant attacks the followed the military coup against Islamist president Mohammed Morsi in July.
