Bauchi - Officials in Nigeria say gunmen suspected of belonging to a radical Islamist sect shot and killed a retired former leader of the nation's prison system and a state attorney general in two attacks.

A security official says former comptroller general Ibrahim Jarma was killed on Monday night after leaving evening prayers at a mosque in Azare, a town in northern Bauchi state.

The official says one of Jarma's guards also was killed in the attack by suspected Boko Haram members. The official spoke on condition of anonymity as he wasn't authorized to speak to journalists.

Borno state spokesperson Inuwa Bala said on Tuesday that suspected Boko Haram members shot and killed the state's attorney general late Monday night.

Boko Haram is waging a bloody guerrilla fight against Nigeria's weak central government.
