Bangui - Three civilians were killed on Wednesday during an attack by rebels of the Seleka coalition in the Central African Republic, according to witnesses.

At least ten other people were injured when about 20 rebels, in two vehicles, opened fire on residents of Bangui's Fatima neighbourhood.

The rebels entered the area to try to abduct a young man for unknown reasons, and started shooting into the crowd who tried to protect him, witnesses told dpa.

The violence in the CAR has continued even after interim President Michel Djotodia officially dissolved the Seleka coalition last month.

The coalition had brought him to power after a coup.

Djotodia has been struggling to restore law and order, despite the support of more than 3 500 African Union peacekeepers.

CAR has been plunged into a humanitarian crisis since the Seleka coalition rose up against the-then government in December and overthrew president Francois Bozize in March.

About 400 000 of CAR's 4.5 million people have been displaced and dozens of civilians have been killed, especially in the country's north-west.
