Dakar - Senegal's justice minister says the upcoming trial of former Chadian President Hissene Habre will be aired live on television and radio.

The announcement was made on Wednesday by Justice Minister Sidiki Kaba while his Chadian counterpart was visiting the Senegalese capital.

Habre, who has lived in exile in Senegal for more than two decades, is facing trial on charges of war crimes, crimes against humanity and torture during his rule in Chad.

In May 1992, a Chadian truth commission reported that Habre's government was responsible for an estimated 40 000 deaths.

Defence lawyers have dismissed the special tribunal that will try Habre in Senegal as a political tool of his enemies. They emphasize that the government of Chad President Idriss Deby, who removed Habre from office, is the court's largest donor.
