Senegal youths burn church, destroy bar

2011-06-27 11:11

Dakar - Hundreds of Muslim protesters descended on a Jehovah's Witness temple and a bar in a conservative Muslim neighbourhood of the Senegalese capital on Sunday, setting the buildings on fire in a rare instance of religious extremism in the predominantly Muslim nation.

Thierno Mbeugne, spokesperson for the local imam association, said the head imam in the conservative Yoff district of Dakar had asked the youths to march on Sunday against what they considered "acts of aggression against their faith". They were targeting the temple because they claim its members were proselytising, and the bar because it was selling alcohol.

He said the Islamic religious leaders did not endorse the violence, "but they do think that the youths were right" to destroy the church and the bar.

One of the rioters Mame Faye, 24, explained that the mob set upon the temple while churchgoers were praying inside before setting upon the bar.

Other witnesses, however, said that the hundreds of protesters burst into the establishment and began drinking the cans of beer. They then stripped the building, making off with the refrigerator, the air conditioners and the furniture. Then they set it on fire.

A doctor who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak to the press said his clinic had treated 37 people, including several wounded police officers. One had a stab wound. The police used tear gas to disperse the crowd.

Mbeugne claimed that the head of the temple had been actively trying to convert locals. He said that under the cover of teaching English, she had started handing out crosses and Jehovah's Witness literature.

Amazing - where are all the comments? It seems it's only when the Muslims get a taste of their own medicine from the Israel Defence Force that all the comments come out. People are stinking hypocrites!!!

Cornix, your anti-Islamic stance in now boring. One cannot make broad generalisations based on the extreme behaviour of some fanatics with their own skewed interpretation of their religion.

      Cornix - 2011-06-27 13:48

Daaivark - I understand that you may find it boring, but please, study those sites for a few days (preferably a few weeks) and see if you still find it boring. I don't do it because of hate, but because people are deliberately trying to hide what really is going on.

That is why they need to destroy everything, because they have no self control, and if sex or alcohol or drugs are available, they will turn into deviants, acoholics, and drug addicts.

      suspiciousme - 2011-06-27 11:54

Have you been to Senegal? This is an isolated incident carried out by extremists. Believe me it is a lot safer, friendlier and a lot less crime than in SA. Certainly not the bloodthirsty violence that accompanies all acts of crime in SA. I know, I've been there, family live there and I am moving there at the end of the year. Who are the "they " you mention in your comment? Twit.

  • chileaan - 2011-06-27 12:22

That's just Muslim's for you so violent ......

      zaatheist - 2011-06-27 15:52

Ho hum! One bunch of religious crackpots attacking another bunch of religious crackpots.

  • slojam - 2011-06-27 12:28

This is just so sad. Islam does not condone nor does it teach this behaviour. Saying that all Muslims behave this way is as good as saying that because the local prostitute is a Christian, all Christians are like that. Is that how you judge people? Is that what you are taught?

      Doublepost - 2011-06-27 12:36

This is the problem, not all muslims are extremists but most extremists are muslim! Once you understand that, then the directed anger towards muslims will make sense.

      bigBG - 2011-06-27 12:46

no it is not what christians are taught, and numpty down below with "most muslims are extremists" is showcasing his ignorance, extremists are everywhere. Is attacking Iraq, Afghanistan etc not an act of extremism from the so called Christian United States? Is corrective rape not extremism, from black men? Is nationalisation and land grabs not extremism from Juli - Ass and friends? Is tatoos, body piercing and promiscous behaviour not extremism? Is alcohol addiction not extremism? So tell me are all those people muslim??? Real believers in Christ and his true disciples would not mock another mans religion, showcase your faith by your good heart.

  • Doublepost - 2011-06-27 12:34

"...setting the buildings on fire in a rare instance of religious extremism in the predominantly Muslim nation." Are you kidding me?! Rare?! Really?! Come on now, be truthful for once!

      slojam - 2011-06-27 12:37

Have they burnt down you house recently? Are you maybe reffering to the Crusades? Is the real truth biting already?

      suspiciousme - 2011-06-27 12:50

@ Doublethick :Don't generalize. Have you even been outside the borders of your little town? Please only comment on subjects you know something about. Ignoramuses like you are helping to perpetuate the intolerances so prevalent in our society. Crime is in fact very rare in Senegal unlike in South Africa

  • bigBG - 2011-06-27 12:40

impossible, Jehovah's witnesses do not believe in the cross so how were they handing them out???? There is nothing more scary than ignorance and one can never underestimate the power of ignorance that some fools possess.

      OzzyInSA - 2011-06-27 14:57

Jehovah's Witnesses also worship in Kingdom Halls not Temples. Also, it is very unlikely that the leader of the congregation is a woman as congregation elders are men. It is part of the Winessing work to preach and teach about the Bible to the community. The Witnesses do not "convert" people but offer a choice. It is up to the individual to decide whether to "convert".

      Cornix - 2011-06-27 15:00

Slojam, continue on your path, believe what you have been told. It is your right. As for me, I will keep on believing what I am believing. It is my right. Just remember: You have been warned.

  • Zee - 2011-06-27 15:11

This is disgusting - the vandalisation/destroying of religious houses/sites should never ever occur. Hope they find the buggers and chop their hands off!

      Cornix - 2011-06-27 15:23

Zee, I salute you for condemning this behaviour.

      InternetMan - 2011-06-27 15:30

Yeah its more than most Muslims can do. They never condemn any of this i mean look at the other comments on this very comment section. "Not all muslims are like that" but nobody condemning the behavior.

  • maseratifitt - 2011-06-27 16:11

Why destroy a bar? No, man! A drinking nation is a happy nation.

  • Ryan - 2011-06-28 21:28

Witnesses call their places of worship Kingdom Halls. We do this to separate ourselves from the religions of the world that have no problems sharing such designations. We want to teach people bible truths. Jesus said, "This means everlasting life, their taking in knowledge of you, the only true God, and of the one whom you sent forth, Jesus Christ." (John 17:3) In order for that to happen Romans 10:13-15 needs to happen. A person becomes a baptized witness of Jehovah only after having a personal bible study, and then prayerfully deciding to live their life according to Jehovah God's word found in the Bible. Sisters are not heads of any congregation. This is the way the apostolic Christian congregation was established. "I want YOU to know that the head of every man is the Christ; in turn the head of a woman is the man; in turn the head of the Christ is God." (1 Corinthians 11:3) Paul goes on to explain further in verses 7-10. Elders and ministerial servants are set in place to manage the flock, but no "leaders" exist. Jesus clearly explained this at Matthew 23:8-10. We don't use crosses or any images in our worship because they're idols. According to Exodus 20:4, 5; Leviticus 26:1; 1 Corinthians 10:14, and Psalm 115:4-8 images should not be used in worship. Acts 15:20 tells us to "abstain from things polluted by idols". We definitely wouldn't want to pollute our worship with idols.

      Sylvia - 2011-12-20 08:11

the bible will always be true! people should have love and respect and if you do not teach love then what are you and i to become. yes some people are fanatics but can you not do it with love. hiding ones acts of barbarism and prejudice should be condoned by the leader and not justified by smart remarks. please read john 13:35 and 1Peter 4:8.

Government of senegal should know what to do about this because we are one Africa. I understand that this riot is not only for churches onle but both Nigerians. Half of Senegalese people are not happy to see Nigerians in their country. But it is unfair because if you travel to Nigeria, you can not differenciate Segalese from Nigerians. Senegalese people live their lives as they want there in Nigeria. So Senegalese government should think about this and know what to do. Thanks.
