Soccer star in court for murder
Johannesburg - Former Orlando Pirates soccer star Mandla Sithole was released on R5 000 bail during his appearance on a murder charge by a Roodepoort magistrate on Wednesday.
Arguing through his lawyer, Mafori Mphahlele, Sithole said he was willing to pay only R3 000, despite calls by the investigating officer and the State that bail should be set at R5 000.
Ignoring Sithole's argument, Magistrate Ruby Matthys set bail at R5 000, saying it was a "reasonable amount".
Before postponing the case to June 30, the State ordered Sithole to report to the Brackenhurst police station every Wednesday.
Sithole told the court he would be relocating to the area to avoid contact with the murder victim's family, who lived near his home in Dobsonville, Soweto.
The former striker handed himself to police on Monday. He allegedly stabbed and strangled Thulani Ndlovu, 30, on Sunday, in a dispute over R100.
