Sudan condemns Darfur ambush

Khartoum - Sudan on Thursday condemned an attack on United Nations-led peacekeepers in Darfur, accusing rebels of orchestrating the ambush that UN officials initially blamed on suspected state-backed militias.

"The government of Sudan condemns this heinous act and calls on the international community to do whatever necessary to stop such attacks on the peacekeeping forces," said foreign ministry spokesperson Ali al-Sadiq.

"It also calls upon the UN and international community to do something against the leaders of the rebel groups who mostly live in Europe," said Sadiq, reading from a statement.

Officials in the joint African Union and United Nations peacekeeping mission in Darfur known as UNAMID, said on Wednesday that suspected Janjaweed militiamen, who had fought on the side of the state, were responsible for the attack in which seven peacekeepers died.

Sadiq claimed that seven Sudanese, possibly rebels, were killed in the ambush in North Darfur State on Tuesday. The army arrived at the scene several hours after the attack and retrieved six UNAMID trucks, the spokesperson said.

Francois says... I think News24 must stop reporting on Zim and we must make the border real safe and get all the Zimmers back there and let them sort out there own troubles. If Zimbabweans know that they will be persecuted in election violence, why don't they do anything about it and that on such a scale that will force the world to intervene. It is much easier for them to walk over the border and let others worry about there problems. Off course Mbeki and Zuma have a case to answer, but they never will. Mbeki is quiet on Zim for the past 9 years at least and the problem is too complex for Zuma to understand. Maybe there is an alternative, freeze all Zim's and Zim's peoples assets overseas, dont wire one penny there to ensure that once the ammo is shot, it is shot. Read the article...
