Cairo - Chad's foreign minister Ahmat Allami has accused neighbouring Sudan of engineering Thursday's rebel coup attempt against Chadian President Idriss Deby.
The United Front for Change (Fuc) rebels began marching towards the capital N'Djamena on Wednesday, after clashes with Chadian troops in the east of the country.
Speaking on state-run radio, Deby announced a Chadian troop victory on Thursday.
He said troops had destroyed a rebel column that had attempted to infiltrate the city before dawn.
He called the Fuc "mercenaries", and claimed Sudan had hired the rebels to overthrow him.
Sudan has denied the accusation.
Rebels took the town of Mongo, about 400km east of N'Djamena, on Tuesday.
